Can you get into St Paul’s Cathedral for free?

The direct answer: yes, in specific circumstances, but not for sightseeing. Attending a service is free and open to anyone, on any day the cathedral holds one, including Sundays. Disabled visitors are admitted free, and so is one accompanying carer. Children under 6 go free. UK residents receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Employment Support Allowance can buy a heavily discounted sightseeing ticket under the cathedral’s own scheme, and National Art Pass holders get a substantial discount on walk-up individual tickets. Everything else — the general sightseeing route, the crypt tour and the 528-step dome climb — needs a paid ticket.

Free to worship, ticketed to sightsee

This is the single most misunderstood thing about St Paul’s and it accounts for a good share of the disappointed faces in the churchyard. The cathedral holds services every day and nobody is charged to attend one or to sit and pray. What you cannot do during a service is walk the sightseeing route with a multimedia guide, go down to the crypt as a visitor, or climb the dome. Those are the ticketed parts, and they are what pays to keep a 1675–1710 Wren building standing.

The discounted-ticket routes

The honest caveat

Going in for a service is a real experience and I recommend it, particularly Evensong. It is not a substitute for a visit. You will see the nave and hear the choir and you will not see Thornhill’s dome paintings from the Whispering Gallery, the Stone Gallery view or the crypt tombs. If those are what you came for, buy the ticket and read whether it is worth it first.

Frequently asked questions

Is St Paul’s Cathedral free to enter?

Free to attend a service, ticketed for sightseeing. Disabled visitors and one carer, and children under 6, are admitted free. The nave, crypt and dome galleries on the sightseeing route all require a ticket — see what a ticket covers.

Can I go inside St Paul’s without a ticket?

Yes, to worship. Services run daily and cost nothing to attend, Sundays included, which is also the one day with no general sightseeing. Check the opening hours before you go.

Is there a discount for people on benefits?

UK residents receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Employment Support Allowance can get a heavily discounted sightseeing ticket under the cathedral’s own scheme, arranged directly with the cathedral rather than through a booking site.

Do children get in free?

Under-6s do. Children aged 6 to 17 have their own ticket band and there are two family combinations, one adult or two adults with up to three children. Details on the ticket page.
